Musings: Defining Oneself

Today’s topic is: “What defines you?”

The short answer is “Author, Mother, Part-time Superhero.”

The long answer is… well, longer.

Some people enjoy being defined by their careers. Some are defined by their strong political or religious affiliations. Others feel defined by the weight, skin color, or the way they dress. I think we are all defined by what we accomplish during our lifetime and how we treat other people while we are doing it.

I choose to be defined by a combination of several little things that (hopefully) add up to a decent, caring, and grateful human being.  Here are some of the things that make me who I am.

I am…
a mother.
a wife.
a sister.
a daughter.
a baker.
a lover.
a knitter.
a reader.
a writer.
a student.
an organizer.
a dreamer.

And because I am complicated like that, sometimes I am…
happy.
scared.
silly.
patient.
angry.
grateful.
tired.
frustrated.
thoughtful.
thoughtless.

The truth is… regardless of what we do for a living and how we look on the outside, we are all just humans, together. And it is our individual responsibility to be the best version we can be (and that’s something I work on every day).
