Today’s topic is: “April is the awareness month for many important causes. Which one will you be supporting and why?”
I am supporting National DONATE LIFE Month. Why? Because there are currently 121,322 men, women, and children in the U.S. who are waiting for a lifesaving transplant, and about 20 people die every day from lack of available organs.
I was 21 years old the first time I donated blood. I was so excited because I finally weighed 110 pounds, the minimum amount to be eligible to qualify. (Not an issue I’ve had since… Ah, youth!) Around the same time, I signed up on the National Bone Marrow Donor list and became a card-carrying organ and tissue donor. (Coincidentally, that was also the year I completed my first of four rounds of egg donation for infertile couples struggling to have children.)
Why would I agree to give away so much of myself? Well, you may remember that my job in college was as a recycling coordinator. I was fanatical about recycling and donating life seemed like a natural extension of recycling. After all, why not let other people have whatever I could provide? Apparently, these organ donors I found on Pinterest agree.
If you are already an organ donor, you don’t have to go to these extremes to show your support. This month, simply click on the Twibbon image below to update your Facebook or Twitter profile picture to include the DONATE LIFE badge.
Because of PlateGames, I’m constantly looking for and identifying specialty license plates. (In fact, it has become an addictive habit whenever I see another vehicle. FYI: parking lots are the best hunting grounds.) So I’m happy to share that there are 32 states offering DONATE LIFE specialty plates that support this great cause year-round. Contact your local DMV for details.
If you’d like to become an organ donor, be sure to share your wishes with your family, so they can do their part when the time comes. Inform the DMV next time you update your drivers license, and in the meantime, print off and carry this card in your wallet.
