Today’s topic is: “Describe your favorite spring activity.”
April 26, 2012. May 25, 2013. May 25, 2014. April 29, 2015. These are the dates over the last four years that we officially planted our garden. So while I’d like to say that planting is my favorite spring activity, some years, it has been nearly summer before we got things started.
I don’t know when we will plant this year, or how much, or where… As you can see, I haven’t been doing a lot of planning. It’s impossible (for me) to figure out when the best time to plant is. To illustrate the point, 2013’s chaotic weather comes to mind. On May 3, we got 18 inches of snow but eleven days later, the high was 97 degrees! How is anyone supposed to predict that?!
So instead, I wait around for my husband to say “okay, let’s go.” Then he tills up the ground and we plant a gazillion vegetables: potatoes, onions, tomatoes, zucchini, broccoli, peppers, corn, squash, carrots, radishes… All summer long, we weed and cross our fingers that there will be rain (but not too much), plenty of good insects, not too many hungry deer, and lots of sunshine before our final harvest, which usually comes in early October.
Someday I’d like to live in a climate with a longer growing season, but huge bugs and muggy heat usually accompany that. So for now, I wait and dream.
