Musings: Beat the Heat

Today’s topic is: “How do you beat the heat? Give us some ideas for cool summer fun.”

All over the U.S., it feels like summer. Here in southeastern Minnesota, we average sunny days in the 80s, which are delightful. But twice a summer, for about a week, it gets uncomfortably hot and humid.

Here are my top three tips for staying cool, even on the most sweltering summer days.

Close the Windows
If you don’t have the luxury of air conditioning, take advantage of nature’s nightly cooling cycle. Open the windows at night to let the cool(er) air in and close them in the morning before the heat of the day really sets in.

Ice (Water) Popsicles
My girls love having a cold treat on a hot summer day. So I freeze water into our popsicle tray and dole out as many as they want. No sticky mess. No added sugar. All the refreshment.

$10 Kiddy Pool
Even if you can’t make it to the lake, you can still cool off in your own backyard (or patio or sidewalk). We bought a simple plastic pool at the local hardware store last summer for $10. Find a flat spot in the shade, fill it up with the garden hose, and set your folding chairs around it to make a cooling foot bath for the adults and a safe play area for the children.

How do you stay cool? Share your tips in the comments.
