Today’s topic is: “Would you rather read only one book for a year or only watch one television show for a year? And which one?”
I love to read, but a year is an awfully long time with just one book. Even if I could pick a series (like the incomparable Harry Potter) to read over and over again, I think I’d still have trouble making it through an entire year. (Although I’ve heard that the Game of Thrones book series is long enough to keep me reading for many months.)
If I could only watch one television show for a year, I’d pick something that had multiple seasons, with hundreds or even thousands of episodes, so by the time I finished watching, I would have forgotten how it started and could start over again. (Isn’t that what they do when mowing golf courses or painting the Golden Gate Bridge?)
Which show to choose?
Well, I’ve recently binge-watched all of the episodes of Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Those are wonderful, but I don’t think I’d want to watch them again so soon.
Maybe I could make it into an educational experience by watching all 7,200 episodes of Jeopardy!
What about the exact opposite by watching more than 5,000 episodes of The Jerry Springer Show… Definitely not!
Maybe I should reaffirm that the world is a good place and that I am a special person by watching all 895 episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
Or traveling to far off worlds in any one of the Star Trek series. I used to watch TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. (Captain Kirk was before my time and I can’t even remember the one with Scott Bakula.)
Or I could laugh the year away by watching 41 years of Saturday Night Live or all 9 seasons of Seinfeld.
Or maybe I should gamble and pick one of the drama series that everyone raves about that I haven’t seen yet, like 24, West Wing, Mad Men, or Game of Thrones.
I just can’t decide.
Share your pick in the comments.
