Musings: Travel Book Review

Today’s topic is: “Book review time: tell us about a book you have read recently.”

I’d like to say that I’ve read a handful of fantastic novels this summer, but the truth is, I just haven’t had a chance to sit down and read very much. (I did finally finish Madame Bovary this week! But since I started it so long ago, I can’t really remember what happened in the middle, so I really shouldn’t try to write a review of that one. Oh well.) And my To Read list continues to grow as we move into autumn. Maybe I’ll have more time to read during the upcoming cold months…

One of the activities that has consumed my ‘free time’ recently is planning a long-distance road trip for our family later this fall. This morning, the girls and I stopped by our local library to check out a few non-fiction books about the places we are planning to visit. Upon hearing that I am hoping to visit Niagra Falls, someone recently recommended this book.

You’ve probably heard of the author. He is most known for his award-winning The Polar Express book with its wonderful illustrations.

This book has several impressive illustrations as well that seem to bring Mrs. Annie Edson Taylor and her daredevil adventure to life.

If you haven’t heard of Annie Edson Taylor, don’t worry. I hadn’t either. The real life heroine, at the age of 62, was the first person to go over the falls in a barrel and is still the only woman to complete the trip alone. Unfortunately, this incredible feat didn’t bring her the fame and fortune she had hoped for. (No one believed this little old lady really went over the falls.) She ended up spending summers selling postcards at Niagra Falls while sitting in the shadow of her giant barrel.

If you’ve read any great children’s travel books recently, please leave the titles in the comments. I’m always looking for new suggestions.
