Job Description Change

It’s been a long, long time since I’ve published a real post on this blog, but for those who follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you’ll see that my girls and I have been busy with hands-on activities. Even though I rarely have the time or energy to sit down and write, several times a week, I share a photo or video about our adventures in homeschooling.

So, since my primary job description has evolved over time, I thought it made sense to update my website’s tagline. For the foreseeable future:

“Author, Mother, Part-time Superhero”
has been changed to
“Teacher, Mother, Part-time Superhero”

My articulate aunt Margit recently shared this excellent piece of wisdom with me:

Your byline is “Author, Mother, Part-time Super Hero.” All of those are true.  You may want to think about them in order of relevance or dominance at different stages in your life.  Right now I think of you as “Mother, Part-time Super Hero [leaning heavily toward full-time], Author.” In a few years you might be “Full-time Super Hero, Mother, Author” as you continue to role model for your girls how a strong woman, wife, and mother weathers the variables in life. Later still you may be “Author, Mother, Full-time Super Hero.” By then your girls will be in high school or college and you may be published, based on the journals you kept earlier in life that become ‘material’ for your books.

She helped me realize that we all have these shifts in responsibility or interest over time. I feel certain that when my children no longer need me as their teacher, I’ll have an opportunity to reconsider to my literary dreams. In the meantime, I’m trying to remind myself that being a part-time superhero is an honor and a privilege and not lose sight of long-term possibility of being promoted to full-time.
