Musings: Summer Crowns

Today’s topic is: “Share your favorite craft that involves flowers.”

Did I mention that my favorite flowers are daisies? Part of that love came from the scene in You’ve Got Mail (one of my favorite movies) when Meg Ryan is sick and Tom Hanks brings her daisies: ‘Don’t you think that daisies are the friendliest flower?’ And part of it came from my childhood when my mom would braid us flower crowns for special occasions. Since my older sister’s birthday is in June, she had glorious wildflower crowns several years in a row.

My birthday is in October, so there are fewer pictures of me with those beautiful crowns on. However in the summer of 1980, my maternal grandmother came to visit and my mom made us both crowns.

I’m happy to say that the tradition has continued. When my sister had her engagement party in 2007, she wore a very elegant flower topper (and pretty much the same expression she had at her eighth birthday party).

When my daisy patch starts to bloom this summer, I’ll try to make a couple of these special crowns for my daughters. I found a lovely tutorial on Pinterest about how to braid them.

What is your favorite flower craft? Share your ideas in the comments.
