Musings: Favorite Room

Today’s topic is: “What is your favorite room in your house?”

Old Farmhouse, phoebedecook.com

We live in a small farmhouse that was built in 1873. It has about 1,500 square feet of living space, which includes all the necessities: a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a bathroom, a laundry room, two bedrooms, an office, and a couple of closets.

I love this old house for several reasons. First, it’s small, which makes it faster to clean (in theory). Second, both of my children were born here at home. Third, it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Fourth, it’s located on a picturesque plot of land. Fifth, and most importantly, it’s where my family is.

To choose a favorite room within this house is tough. So instead, I’m going to tell you why every room is my favorite!

I LOVE MY KITCHEN because it’s where I get to bake pies and prepare healthy meals for my family. It’s also where I prep corn, peas, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, green beans, peaches, strawberries, and cherries to go into the freezer for the coming months.

I LOVE MY BATHROOM because it’s where I can find ten minutes of peace on the days I’m lucky enough to squeeze in a shower.

I LOVE MY LIVING ROOM because it’s where the wood stove creates cozy heat during the long winter and where I get to enjoy a beautiful view out the large windows all year round. It’s also where my laptop is, so it’s where I write (and you all know how much I love to write!)

I LOVE MY BEDROOM because we have a very comfortable bed and blackout curtains. If it weren’t for the children getting up so early, I’d happily sleep 12 hours a day.

I LOVE THE OFFICE because I got to pick out the blue wall colors. It’s where my bookshelves are, it has a beautiful desk made from a reclaimed door, and has a stunning view of the long driveway.

I LOVE THE GIRLS BEDROOM/BIG ROOM UPSTAIRS because it’s where my yarn stash is stored. It’s also a big open space where the girls can play and (sometimes) sleep.

And when we’re done building my tiny house writer’s retreat/guest house next spring, my laptop (as well as part of my book collection, and my yarn stash) will move up there and I will hopefully be able to spend a little bit more uninterrupted time writing. I have a feeling that may become my favorite room.

What’s your favorite room? Leave me a note in the comments.
