Musings: Earworms

Today’s topic is: “What earworms have haunted you?”

Do you ever get songs stuck in your head, repeating over and over again? (Officially they are called earworms, but that sounds like something squishy and icky crawling around inside your head, so I prefer not to think about that term.)

For some reason, when I’m walking down the driveway, the song Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone (Bill Withers, 1971) always seems to always pop into my head. (Remember that seasonal change scene from Notting Hill with Hugh Grant walking through the market?)

And for the same unknown reason, I always sing La Vie en Rose (Edith Piaf, 1940) when I’m washing dishes.

Recently, my daughters have been singing Don’t Worry, Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin, 1988). And I think this is one of the best songs to get stuck with. After all, everyone could use this reminder at least once a day.

I read somewhere that if you want to get a song out of your head, all you have to do is hum The Flight of the Bumblebee (certainly not an east task), but since I kind of like all these songs, I haven’t had to try it recently.

Please share your earworms in the comments. It will give me a few more to try out in my daily routine.
