Today’s topic is: “What is your first memory?”
Memories are funny things. People say that children don’t remember things when they are very young, but my earliest memory took place when I was just under a year old.
I remember sitting in the kitchen sink of our unfinished house on Pudding Hill, taking a bath, and hearing the opening theme music for NPR’s All Things Considered on the radio. That short collection of notes is firmly embedded in my memory. Even today, as I write, I can hear it in my head. Since most of my young life was spent without the influence of television, it seems the radio made quite an impression.
Maybe the reason that this very early memory (if it’s accurate) hasn’t faded into oblivion over the last forty years is because whenever I hear that piece of music, the image of me in the sink pops back into my head. This repeated recollection has forever connected the two.
