Musings: Chores

Today’s topic is: “What are your favorite and least favorite household chores?”

My favorite household chore is tidying. The organizer in me loves the dramatic visual improvement that comes from ten minutes of putting toys and books away, picking up old socks, and returning the pillows and blankets to their proper place on the beds. (Plus I tend to get fewer middle-of-the-night injuries when the floor is clear of debris.) Here’s what the playroom looks like during the day and just before the lights go out.

To round out my top five favorite chores, I’d have to say:
2. hand-washing dishes,
3. putting away the laundry,
4. unloading the dishwasher, and
5. washing laundry.

I certainly love the end results, which almost makes it worth it. That said, I am very grateful that I have appliances that make this aspect of my life a sidebar instead of the main attraction. (According to her Facebook page, Melinda Gates is focusing her attention these days on how a large portion of the world is still spending an extraordinary amount of time and effort to accomplishing these everyday tasks.)

I’m not sure I can pick a single chore that is my least favorite, so here are my bottom five:
5. vacuuming,
4. washing windows,
3. mopping the kitchen floor,
2. dusting, and
1. cleaning the bathroom.

My husband would probably say that I never do these chores, but in the four years we’ve been together, I’ve done them all at least once. ‘Rarely’ would be a more accurate grumble.┬áBut if someone showed up tomorrow and offered to do these things for me, I wouldn’t turn them away. In fact, I’d probably invite them in and bake them a pie while they scrub the toilet.
