Today’s topic is: “What is something you always take with you on vacation?”
It’s been a while since I’ve had to pack for a real vacation. Last summer, my husband, daughters, and I spent the July 4th weekend at the lake in northern Minnesota. Since it involved a six-hour drive and we hadn’t had an overnight away from home with the girls, we didn’t know exactly what to bring. So we filled the pick-up truck with just about everything we owned; cribs, toys, books, and a cooler full of snacks. For the most part, it went well, but we did run out of diapers at one point and no one slept particularly well. We did the same thing for our drive to Phoenix for Christmas, with similar results.
Once the PlateGames.com camper van renovation is finished (which I hope will be in the next few weeks), we will be able to take a few short trips around the area. And at some point this summer, we plan to have an overnight adventure to test out the sleeping bunk and the fold-out bed. I’m not exactly sure what we’ll need to pack but I’m sure we can figure it out as we go along.
Since formal vacations are few and far between these days, I try to make the most of the tidbits of free time that come my way. In my summer purse, in addition to tiny hair barrettes, Kleenex, and spare diapers for the girls, I always carry a portable knitting project (like a sock or mitten or scarf) and one of the books that I’m reading at the time. Then I am prepared to enjoy any 5-minute vacation that life throws at me.
