Musings: Family Motto

Today’s topic is: “Does your family have a motto?”

Not officially, but there are common phrases that are repeated often in our household.

Be Gentle, consciousink.com

“Be gentle.” This can apply to how the children treat each other, how they treat their toys, or how they convey the tone of their voices.

“Too much of anything gives you a belly ache.” Our youngest has really embraced this phrase. She repeats it often when her older sister asks for more dessert. We remind them that moderation and variety are the healthiest way to live.

“You took it out, you put it away.” We are still working on this, but it works about 90% of the time. It helps that we’ve also told them that if Mama puts it away, it goes away for a long time. (And if Papa has to put it away, it will likely end up in the garbage can!)

“Do your job!” This is usually used with a stern tone (after many polite attempts) when the girls aren’t doing something that I’ve asked them to do. (Apparently, New England Patriot’s coach Bill Belichick is famously quoted as saying this… but I think I said it first.)

I have a feeling that this list will change dramatically as our little ones get older. Hopefully, we’ll get them off to a good start and the rest will be easy. (HA! I know, wishful thinking.)

Please share your family motto in the comments.

These are all good mottos! My parents use to say, “you don’t need it, you want it.” It was mostly about toys but when I grew up it has stuck with me because I don’t have a lot of money and I have bills to pay so buying something I want is less important than paying my bills. I’m sure once I get money I’ll reward myself once in awhile!
